Marie Robert’s ode to harmony

Every morning at dawn, author and philosophy teacher Marie Robert shares her thought of the day on her Instagram account, @philosophyissexy. On behalf of NEUR|AÉ, she considers our desire for balance, something that’s often seen as the holy grail in our (over) active lives, and how harmony is a different, more abstract and more gentle goal.

This is an ode to harmony

It’s strange how we all aspire to ‘balance’. Firstly, the balance between our working lives and private lives, but also the balance between our bodies and our minds. Living a balanced life is a highly reasonable goal — the key to a stable, serene existence. But have you considered that balance and harmony are not necessarily one and the same? With balance, two opposing forces cancel each other out. Stability is reached when elements take up exactly the same space, be that in time, physical space or consideration. No part dominates the other. On an intimate level, this means your career is just as important as your family, so the space allocated to the two is equivalent. On the flip side, harmony offers another way of seeing things. The Greek word armonia is more about fitting together, so all the elements join together in the way that suits us the best.

In harmony, different forces of varying intensity and importance come together for a common goal: our happiness, our joy, our serenity. A harmonious painting does not necessarily convey the perfect balance of colours, its unique combination of shades is what creates its distinctive beauty. Harmony implies an arrangement between elements, which although perhaps unusual, works for us. Maybe at one point in our lives there is more red and at another point more blue and grey. In essence, it does not matter. Without the need for perfection, pressure or dogma, harmony is what makes our lives so beautiful. It is what brings richness in the form of pleasure, surprise, action. Imagine if harmony could be seen on our faces... #Harmonie #Neuraé.
