I’m a joyful person at heart, but I think yoga has opened up vast amounts of joy in me

Alexandra Capton, director of the Bandha Yoga Center

A mother of four, Alexandra Capton runs the Bandha Yoga studio in Paris. On the mat and in her day-to-day life, she talks about what brings her joy every morning.

When was the last time you burst out laughing?

Shortly after waking up this morning. Just as I was getting up, I got a call from my husband, who was in Los Angeles on business. He told me he was going to bed and wished me a good day, I said good night and we both burst out laughing, 11,000 km apart.

What’s your ode to joy?

My ode to joy is naturally linked to yoga. I adore this space (Bandha Yoga): it’s where I find myself and see students I love, and that brings me joy. This morning, I took a yoga class and did some poses that gave me a lot of joy. So in a way, that's my ode to joy.

Who has brightened your day?

My youngest daughter Neva, who has just turned 12 and never forgets to ask me every morning: “Hi Mum, how’s it going? Did you sleep well?”, then my dog comes over to say hello. It’s those little everyday things that brighten my day.

What place makes you feel good?

A place in the heart of nature in Corsica, where I’m lucky enough to be able to go from time to time to reflect and rest. Our house is right in the middle of scrubland, surrounded by wilderness, animals and the scent of myrtle, which I love so much. That’s definitely the place that brings me the most joy and happiness.

What’s the secret to your glow?

The secret to my glow? I don’t know if I have a secret. Every morning, I wake up and think how lucky I am to be loved by so many people, not least my 4 children. And then here too, this community of students who I love very much, who are my friends and who are very important in my daily life. So that’s really what my glow is all about: feeling, knowing I’m loved and having the ability to multiply that love for everyone around me.

Alexandra Capton likes to keep things simple when it comes to beauty. To reveal her natural radiance, she uses the “joie” routine morning and evening.
